PC-FASTYPE(tm) Version 3.01 Trendtech Corporation
Welcome to PC-FASTYPE for the IBM-PC and Compatibles!
PC-FASTYPE is a typing instruction program SPECIFICALLY designed for IBM-PC
styled keyboards. These quick-start instructions will get you going right
away. You MUST have a Color/Graphics Adapter Card (CGA) or equivalent (EGA),
(NOT Hercules), on your PC or PC-FASTYPE won't work.
Read the file NEWVER.DOC for a list of changes to PC-FASTYPE.
TO LOAD:
Floppy Disk Drive: Place the disk in any drive and type:
PCFT to start PC-FASTYPE with the PC-style keyboard
ENFT to start PC-FASTYPE with the Enhanced keyboard
followed by the ENTER key.
Fixed Disk Drive: First create a sub-directory then copy the entire
contents of the disk to the new directory. Change to the new directory
and type PCFT or ENFT followed by the ENTER key.
TO RUN:
After the tables are loaded, Menu #1 will be displayed. Just press F10 to
start a drill of the HOME keys. To return to Menu #1 press the Escape key
or the F1 function key.
WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO:
For DRILLS: Place the fingers of each hand on the home keys (ASDF JKL:) and
type each letter as you are prompted for it. The selection of letters for you
to type is random, the number of characters you have to successfully type is
displayed before you start. When the drill is finished your WPM and other data
will be displayed in the text panel.
For LESSONS: type each character pointed to by the cursor () and when you
reach the symbol, press the enter key (┘) (for "carriage-return"). When
you finish the lesson your WPM and other data will be displayed in the text
panel.
FUNCTION KEYS:
The function keys have two purposes: 1. Pressing any function key (F1-F5
only) during a typing DRILL or LESSON will cause the corresponding primary
Menu to be displayed, 2. Pressing a function key while a primary MENU is
displayed will cause SELECTION of the item listed next to the function key
name on the Menu.
WHILE RUNNING:
MENUS:
There are 5 drill, lesson, and feature selection menus and 2
sub-menus for selecting additional keys to learn. The primary
menus can be displayed by pressing function keys F1 to F5 anytime
while the screen keyboard is displayed. And, while any selection
menu is displayed you can go to another menu either by selecting
it from Menu #1 or by first holding down the ALT key and pressing
F1, F2, F3, F4, or F5.
<Esc>ape key:
Pressing the Escape key anytime during a drill or lesson will
cause the drill or lesson to terminate and the menu you started
the lesson from to be displayed.
Help:
ALL menus have the Help Facility available. For the primary menus,
F1 is always the HELP key; for the two sub-menus, type the letter
"h" to get the Help Facility. Follow the instructions given.
Note: Not all non-IBM PC's have the "on-screen PAGING" hardware feature.
If you press F1 for HELP and you screen goes blank and the
machine locks up then you cannot use that feature. Instead,
use the BASIC program supplied to print out the HELP screens
on your printer. The User's Guide on disk tells you how.
More details can be found in the PC-FASTYPE User's Guide on disk. Be sure
to read the NEWVER.DOC file on disk for the latest information about this
release of PC-FASTYPE.
CAVEATS:
* PC-FASTYPE will run on most compatibles; however, it will NOT run on a
PC with a HERCULES MONOCHROME GRAPHICS Card or "look-a-like" installed.
* PC-FASTYPE does not behave well with memory resident programs such as
SIDEKICK or SUPERKEY. Those programs intercept the keystrokes
before passing them on to PC-FASTYPE. This inherent delay may cause
your session scores to be skewed thus causing inaccurate WPM ratings
(Lotus METRO does this). Certain keystroke combinations may lock up your
PC. We recommend that you disable all memory resident programs before
using PC-FASTYPE.
* Earlier releases of 3.0 were unable to run under DOS versions below
3.0, and there was a problem with the color combinations (YELLOW was
coming out as BROWN); these problems have been fixed in this version.
TRENDTECH will replace anyone's version of PC-FASTYPE with these problems
free of charge; just call or write.
DOCUMENTATION:
Documentation in the form of a comprehensive USER'S GUIDE is stored on
disk. To print the guide just ready your printer and type in:
a:printdoc<ret>
-or-
x:PRINT a:pcfastyp.doc (for DOS 2.x)
-or-
copy pcfastyp.doc lpt1: (direct to your printer)
REGISTRATION:
This is a shareware program, if you are using this typing instruction
